“The narrator— it’s just you, isn’t it?”
It’s not like I didn’t expect this to happen, but it caught me off guard when someone pulled me aside at a recent event to confirm, “The narrator— it’s just you, isn’t it?”
It must be very hard for some people to imagine attempting writing in a voice or intonation that is not exactly one’s own. Who does the voice belong to? Who else, but the author, could bear responsibility for the one that speaks through the text?
